The Mystery of Marriage

I wonder what the relevance of the Biblical template of marriage is in these times. As I write I am aware of failed marriages and gay marriages, and I do not doubt that we have all known pain, and that we have all found love, somewhere. I am inspired by this Biblical verse in Ephesians 5:29-32 "For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church." And I also am inspired by Galatians 3:28 which says that in Christ there is neither male nor female, among other things. Marriage is a mystery, seems to be the message for me. I guess that the mystery of marriage is in how it works at all! I loved being single over 20 years ago, but it had to come to an end because of its own challenges. Once the decisio...

On My Way

My artistic journey has brought me to learn a new skill - watercolour painting. Let me tell you how I got here. I will start with a brief history so you get to know a bit more about myself and what inspires me.

I started off with scrapbooking in the 90s when I got engaged and then married to my husband of over 20 years now. I started off by scrapbooking my engagement, then my wedding and honeymoon. It was a great way to express my creativity as I set out on the journey of life together with a partner.

As you can see from the cover of my engagement scrapbook, I used embellishments from the cake, and the colour was inspired by my dress on the day. My love of scrapbooking continued till my first child turned 3, and then I had a second child. Let me tell you, scrapbooking is hard to maintain when you have two children, so it slowly disappeared off my to-do lists! I still collect photos in the hopes that I will take it up again one day - maybe when I retire!

But scrapbooking was the perfect lead in to cardmaking! I spent more than a decade on the craft of making cards and giving them to loved ones. I invited friends to crafternoons, where I shared my tools and materials. I joined a company where I could sell their products while making cards with them.

Quite by fortune, I found a dip pen and some ink in a craft shop one day, and thought I could take up calligraphy again (I had tried it once before). I also thought it would be a great complementary skill for cardmaking. And I discovered a Facebook page where I could learn the art of calligraphy under the gentle guidance of an experienced calligrapher. I also discovered more calligraphy resources here.

I don't remember how I got into the art of watercolour painting. Was it because I wanted to illustrate my calligraphy? Was it because I saw a lot of intriguing loose floral painting videos on Instagram? Was it the pandemic??!!

I don't remember, but I also have a friend who loves to watercolour, and after having a chat with her, I decided to give it a go. My watercolour painting was initially inspired by my love for my husband. I painted the hibiscus that he gave me one anniversary which is growing in our garden:

Encouraged by this painting, my journey continued. I am not sure if  Google was behind it, but I found an instructor who could teach me watercolour in the comfort of my room, and at times that suited me - all online!

I learned to paint in a looser style, with her help, and I painted this:

And this:

So there you go - fast tracked to the present! There is a lot more to share, and I hope to do so soon. Let's catch up again online!
